AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES MAJOR (30 hours)

A grade of C or above is required for the course to count toward the BA degree in African American Studies

Core Courses (12 hours)

• AFAM 201 Introduction to African American Studies I (3 hours)
• AFAM 202 Introduction to African American Studies II (3 hours)
• Any 300-level AFAM approved course (3 hours)
• AFAM 498 or 499, Senior Seminar (3 hours)

Additional Courses (18 hours)

• 3 approved courses in the humanities (e.g., HIST, ENGL, ANTH) (9 hours)
• 3 approved courses in the social sciences (e.g., POLI, SOCY, PSYC) (9 hours)

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES MINOR (18 hours)

A minor in the African American Studies Program strengthens an undergraduate degree in the College of Arts and Sciences by providing students with the interdisciplinary tools and resources to study the experiences of people of African descent and to evaluate black historical, cultural, social, economic and political developments in South Carolina, the South, the United States, and beyond. In addition to 2 core courses, students will have the opportunity to select related courses in other disciplines (as approved by the program director and faculty advisors).

Core Courses (6 Hours)

• AFAM 201 - Introduction to African-American Studies I (3 hours)
• AFAM 202 - Introduction to African-American Studies II (3 hours)

Additional Courses (12 Hours)

• 3 hours of an AFAM course or other course related to African American Studies numbered 200 and above (as approved by program).
• 9 hours of AFAM courses or other courses related to African American Studies numbered 300 and above (as approved by program).

Note:

No more than one Independent Study course (3 hours) may be applied to the minor. Independent Study requires the approval of the Director of African American Studies.
