Current Research:  Although retired from full time teaching at USC in 2000, Rathbun has remained active by teaching short courses and workshops around the nation.  He also participated in DMORT efforts for identification for the 9-11 remains.  Consulting to the Central Identification Laboratory of the military Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command are part of his professional activities.  The Physical Anthropology section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences bestowed the T. D. Stewart Award (the highest honor in Forensic Anthropology) on him in 2005 for life time achievement and contributions to the field.  Despite the lack of facilities for handling soft tissue and decomposed remains, he continues to be available for the analysis of human skeletal material and is still the only Board Certified Forensic Anthropologist in the state of South Carolina.
