ANTH 722: Summer Field School in Archaeology (6 credits)

May 13 – June 28 (called a SSI course)

The University of South Carolina's summer field school in archaeology with the Wateree Archaeological Research Project (WARP) will include a mix of undergraduate and graduate students, and possibly volunteers. Students will gain hands-on experience in basic archaeological excavation, mapping, note-taking, flotation, and laboratory processing. Graduate students will take on supervisory responsibilities. This summer we continue large-scale excavations at the Belmont Neck site, occuped from about A.D. 900-1300 and the earliest known mound center in the chiefdom of Cofitachequi. This summer we hope to locate and excavate a house!

Students will work at the site in Camden or the laboratory at either Historic Camden Revolutionary War Park or the Department of Anthropology, USC, in Columbia five days a week, Tuesdays through Saturdays. Workdays run from 7:15 am to 3:30 pm in Camden.

In addition to tuition and technology fee, students pay a $30 fee that will cover some basic laboratory and field facility costs, including the cost of the required manual that will be available at the beginning of the field school.

Grades will be based on field and laboratory performance, timely completion of paperwork, daily oral quizzes, and demonstration of responsibility to the project. There may be written tests on knowledge gained in the course. Graduate students will maintain a daily log that must be turned in each Saturday. Participants must be in good health and expect to work long, hot days. Application to the instructor is required for admittance or registration. Please note that University guidelines will apply to the use of all non-prescription drugs and alcohol, and that smoking will not be allowed in the excavation units.

Please complete the following information & return by noon on Friday, April 18 (early applications are encouraged so that you may register on time in April); Return by mail or leave in departmental mailbox:
