ANTH 322: Summer Field School in Archaeology
May 13 – June 28 (Sign up for SSI)
NEW!
3 credits for basic field school and digging
6 credits optional: sign up to complete additional research project
Join the Wateree Archaeological Research Project (WARP) as a student excavator! Students gain hands-on experience in basic archaeological excavation, mapping, note-taking, and laboratory processing. This summer we continue large-scale excavations at the Belmont Neck site occupied from about A.D. 900-1300. It is the earliest known mound center in the chiefdom of Cofitachequi. We are searching for a house!
Beginning May 13 and ending June 28, students will work at the site in Camden or the laboratory at Historic Camden five days a week, from Tuesday through Saturday, arrive 7:15 am and leave 3:30 pm from Camden. Each Saturday we share a special pot-luck Pig Out lunch. Notice that course begin and end dates cover both Maymester and Summer Session I, but this is categorized as a SSI course.
In addition to tuition and the technology fee, students pay a $30 fee that will cover basic laboratory and field facility costs, including the cost of the required manual that will be available at the site upon arrival.
Grades will be based on field and laboratory performance, timely completion of paperwork, and daily oral quizzes. Grading for 6 credits will include a research project with a written component. Participants must be in good health and expect to work long, hot days: this is very much a hands-on, in-the-field course. Application to the instructor is required for admittance or registration. Although completion of ANTH 319/320 Principles of Archaeology helps acquaint the student with archaeological principles and terminology, no prior experience or coursework in archaeology is required. Please note that University guidelines will apply to the use of all non-prescription drugs and alcohol, and that smoking will be forbidden in the excavation units.
Please complete the following information & return by noon on Friday, April 18 (early applications are encouraged so you may register on time in April). Return by mail or leave in departmental mailbox:
