COURSE GOALS: To introduce you to the field of anthropology, especially human biological and cultural evolution. To encourage you to think scientifically about what makes us human.

COURSE OUTLINE: The course is divided into three sections: Introduction, Hominid Evolution, and The Cultural Record.

READINGS: Required text: Physical Anthropology & Archaeology, 1st edition, by Conrad Phillip Kottak, 2004, McGraw-Hill. Additional readings on the web will be assigned. You are expected to read the assigned readings BEFORE class discussion for that day, and may expect in-class quizzes on the readings.

CLICKERS: You are required to buy a clicker for this course and bring it with you to each class period. Clickers will be used to take daily attendance and for in-class surveys, quizzes, and games.

VIDEO: Question sheets on each video will be posted on the Blackboard page. These are to be printed and brought to class on the day of the video, filled out during the film, and handed in at the close of class that day.

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is REQUIRED. Students are expected to attend all classes and all tests. Missed days will be deducted from your final score for the course.

QUIZZES AND TESTS: Quizzes will be given at each video on the content of the video. We will have announced and unannounced quizzes to help you study for the tests. Two tests are scheduled, as well as a final comprehensive examination. Make-up tests are rarely allowed and will be more difficult than the scheduled test. Absence from tests or quizzes will be excuses (and tests allowed to be made up) ONLY if you have a written statement from your doctor or a parent. NOTIFY the professor via email of the reason for your absence AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE MOMENT. Worksheet exercises are assigned and completed on the Blackboard site. Worksheets go off line after the due date and may not be available for make-up, so complete your assignments by the date/time assigned.

GRADING: Grades will be based as follows out of a possible score of 300 points. Tests may include multiple choice, matching, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and essay. All test scores, worksheet scores, and video questions will be counted. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. No extra credit will be offered, so work at completing the assignments in a timely manner to make the best possible grade.
