Teachers, here are a number of activities you can do with your classes. High School: 1) Power Point Presentation. Archaeology in Columbia, SC a. This presentation goes over the field of Anthropology and Archaeology. It briefly describes the research design of the past seasons along with photos and results gained from the research. It also discusses what needs to be done.
2) Essay Assignment. a. Using one of these questions or a variation of them as an essay topic. i. Why is archaeology and anthropology important? ii. Why is archaeology important at African, African American sites? iii. What can archaeology contribute to society? iv. What does archaeology tell us about the lives of the people that worked in the kitchen?
3) Museum Display a. Have your students see the local exhibit at the Seibels House (Historic Columbia).
Grades 6-8: 1) Match the artifact types to their names. What are the functions of these objects? a. Write down the function or purpose of the pictured items
2) What type of behaviors or activities do you do in the kitchen? a. Ask students to compare their activities from the activities recovered at the Seibels kitchen through archaeology.
