ANTHROPOLOGY MAJORS AND MINORS E-NEWLETTER 2001(1) (Sept 4)

Three major events of interest, abstracted below. See the attachments for more information.

  1. FIELD TRIP TO CHEROKEE SEPT. 14-16
  2. Sign-up DEADLINE Sept. 10 is limited to 15 majors/minors: only if all spaces are not filled can we take non-majors/minors. Cost is $20, payable by Sept. 10. This is a joint trip with Clemson University students interested in anthropology (they don’t have a major). We will be camping out (it will be COLD), cooking out some meals, and attending the Cherokee Harvest Festival. We’ll see craft demonstrations, do some hiking, and likely experience dancing and storytelling. Cost (subsidized by the Dept. of Anthropology) includes: transportation in University van, breakfast Saturday and Sunday, dinner Saturday, admission to Cherokee Museum and to Oconaluftee Indian Village, entertainment. Cost does NOT include: dinner Friday, lunch Saturday, lunch Sunday. We have tents if you don’t, but you’ll need your own warm sleeping gear. We anticipate leaving Friday 3:00 pm and returning to town by or before 4:00 pm Sunday.

  3. PEACE CORPS VISIT to USC-Columbia
  4. Monday, Sept. 4 – Thursday, Sept. 6

    Sessions in the Career Center, William H. Close (Business) Building on Mon-Wed. At the Career Fair Blitz on Thursday 10:00-3:00.

    Currently nearly 7,000 Peace Corps Volunteers are serving in 77 countries. About a half dozen of our majors who graduated in May are in the Peace Corps! Check them out at http://www.peacecorps.gov

  5. CAREER FAIR BLITZ

Thursday, Sept. 6 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Carolina Coliseum.

Employers are interested in students from all majors and class years, for full time, part-time, or internship/co-op opportunities. Dress professionally and bring multiple copies of your resume.

  3. WE WANT TO POST YOUR PICTURE! It’s painless, it’s digital – so you can keep taking pictures until you get one you like. Come in to the Anthropology Department office between Monday Sept. 24 and Friday Sept. 28, 8:30-4:30 pm, and ask for Cat to take your picture. We want every major and minor. We’ll post them on our bulletin board next to the graduate student pictures.
  4. Grad School? If you are thinking of applying, be sure to sign up and take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) this fall. Talk to your advisor as soon as possible to begin your resume, statement of interest, and choosing a sample of your writing. Check out graduate programs in the AAA Guide to Departments, published yearly and on file in the Anthropology Dept. office.
  5. Ethics! The ANTH 711 Anthropological Ethics class from spring 2001 wrote a two-sided page on ethics and resources to ethical questions for USC students. If you didn’t receive one in class, stop by the office for a copy.
  6. ASA, the Anthropology Student Association, will be meeting on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 4:00 pm in Hamilton 318 (across from the office). Check out their new section on the departmental web page. This organization includes both graduate and undergraduate students. Activities they have done in the past include a private tour of the zoo, anthropological movie nights, picnic, trips to DeKalb Farmer’s Market in Atlanta, workshops on applying to graduate school/writing resumes, and more. Consider attending a professional meeting. This is not only something you can put on your resume, but you’ll find that meetings can renew your excitement in your career. Make job connections, meet (in)famous people, find out about graduate programs, hear the latest research scoops, buy books at 10-25% discount!!! The Undergraduate Director or your advisor will be happy to write you a letter of excuse, but you will need to work ahead of time with class instructors for permission to miss class.
