JOBS THAT CHANGE LIVES!

The AFL-CIO Organizing Institute offers paid fieldwork internship and apprenticeship programs for graduating students interested in doing social justice work, as well as paid summer internship programs for undergraduates.

The Organizing Institute provides hands on field training, assisting workers in gaining union representation. We have a 90% job placement rate and trained union organizers are in high demand. The job requires developing leadership, educating people about their rights, explaining the union organizing process, and running a campaign for union recognition.

Field training consists of an orientation and apprenticeship, working under a lead organizer, taking real responsibility in an organizing campaign. Apprenticeships pay $410 a week, plus housing, transportation, and health insurance.

The Organizing Institute has over a 90% job placement rate for individuals who have gone through the program. The demand is so great that we can not keep up with the demand from local unions for trained organizers. Starting salaries average $25,00-$30,000, with health insurance and other job related expenses included.

For students who are not ready to enter the workforce, we offer our Union Summer program. Union Summer is a 4 week paid internship program that combines field training with an educational background history of the labor movement. It is an exciting introduction to the life of a union organizer.

I can be reached at any time during the semester at (888)444-5141, voicemail only. Again, I will be on your campus for one week. I look forward to hearing from you.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF . . .

This is a new column we would like to promote. We don’t actually have a guest columnist for this month, but we do have a link to Woody Crenshaw’s daily journal web page. Woody, one of our majors (archaeology), just left in September to study for a year on the University of Malta on the Island of Malta, in the Mediterranean. To view his web page:

http://malta.blogspot.com

To communicate with Woody:

Woody@searchmalta.com

We would like to expand this part of the newsletter to hear from others who are traveling, who are in the Peace Corps, out in the job world, attending graduate school, or doing something interesting. We’d like to hear about your past summer experiences, or things you do over Break. Please send submissions to: Gail Wagner, gail.wagner@sc.edu

ANTHROPOLOGY FACULTY INTRODUCE THEMSELVES!

This is one departmental colloquium you will not want to miss. On Thursday, October 11, from 3:30-4:30 pm or so, the faculty in the Department of Anthropology will each give themselves a brief introduction and talk about their current research. There will be slides. This is a chance for you to meet the faculty in an informal setting.

STOP BY AND GET YOUR PHOTO TAKEN!

We are looking to take a photo of every anthropology major and minor. Stop by THIS WEEK at the departmental office and ask Cat to take your photo. Really, it is painless and because it is digital, you can re-take it if you don’t like it. We want to post the pictures on our bulleting board across from the office.
