Welcome to the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. We are a large department with 71 full-time faculty working in 10 undergraduate programs and four graduate programs. The Department offers an undergraduate major in Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek), Comparative Literature, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. As of Fall of 2007, a new Undergraduate Foreign Language Teacher Certification Program is being offered. Undergraduate minors are available in all of these programs as well as in Japanese. Other languages taught include Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, and Swahili.

We offer graduate programs leading to the MA degree in Comparative Literature, French, German, and Spanish, and the PhD degree in Comparative Literature. We also collaborate with the Linguistics program leading to the PhD degree in Linguistics, with the College of Education program leading to the MAT in Foreign Languages. The Chronicle of Higher Education has ranked our program in Comparative Literature among the top ten for faculty productivity in 2007--along with Harvard, The University of Chicago, Stanford, NYU, The University of Pennsylvania, and CUNY. The Department also collaborates with the Linguistics program leading to the PhD degree in Linguistics, and with the College of Education program leading to the MAT in Foreign Languages.
