SCHERZO

by Stephen Orgel
In 1989, when we were all younger and more beautiful, Leonard Barkan and I were in Rome together—Leonard figures significantly in this scholarly investigation, and his absence today has seriously complicated my iconography. We paid a visit to Harry and Beth, who were in Florence, during the course of which we were shown a cache of pictures, which we were allowed to photograph. The pictures are difficult to date, but the best guess is somewhere around the mid-16th century—there has been much scholarly debate over the matter, with some experts claiming they are modern fakes; I’ll be discussing the various kinds of evidence, mostly iconographic, that lead me to believe they are authentic Renaissance paintings. Whatever their date, the pictures themselves are of such extraordinary quality that it’s clear we are dealing here with the work of an unknown master—though even this has been questioned by a small number of dissident art historians.
