features a strong and flexible undergraduate
major and graduate degrees in literature,
composition and rhetoric, creative
writing, and speech communication.
Our diverse faculty boasts national
and internationally known scholars in English and American literature,
African American studies, composition and
rhetoric, history of authorship and publishing, literary theory, linguistics,
communication studies, film, and creative writing.
We foster interdisciplinary work within the department and in our connections
with such USC programs as Comparative
Literature, African
American Studies, Linguistics, Women’s Studies, Southern
Studies, and Film
Studies.

Meili Steele Wins 2007 Russell Research Award
Meili Steele has won the 2007 Russell Research Award for Humanities and Social Sciences, one of the university's most prestigious annual prizes for research and scholarship. This is the third time in five years that the award has gone to a member of the English Department. Previous recepients include Stan Dubinsky (2006) and Janette Hospital (2003).
Carl Jenkinson Wins 2007 Graduate Student Teaching Award
One of our GTAs, Carl Jenkinson, has won the Graduate School's Graduate Student Teaching Award for 2007. Carl will receive his award at the Graduate Student Day on Wednesday, April 4th. Only one award is given each year. Congratulations also to Bill Rivers, Christy Friend, Lee Bauknight, Elizabeth Smith, and all those who do such an excellent job of training and mentoring our teaching assistants.
