Awards and FellowshipsFellowshipsStudents should visit the USC Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs website to find out about programs, workshops, and newsletters. The USC Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs supports and assists students applying for the Rhodes, Truman, Fulbright, Mellon, Goldwater, and other prestigious national awards. Recent English majors who have won these awards include:
Departmental AwardsEach year the department honors its top students with department awards. To be eligible for these awards and scholarships, students must have a GPA of 3.5 and higher and strong faculty recommendations. The essay, short story, and poetry contests are judged by a faculty panel. Award Recipients for 2005-2006 Cary K Smith, Jr. Award: Alexis Stratton, Frances Wosu (seniors) McDuffie Award: Kathleen Curtin (senior) George A. Wauchope Award: Z'Anne Covell (senior) Maximillian LaBorde Scholarship: Elizabeth Coen, Joshua Gehling, Warren Pressley, Rebecca Wilson (juniors) J. Gordon Belser Scholarship: Jennifer Brackett, Aaron Hayes, Kacie Henderson (juniors) George Walker Waring Award:Shannon Feeney, Ralph Matthews (sophomores) J. S. Reynolds Essay Contest Award: Samuel Lackey (nominated by Dr. Leon Jackson) Haviliah Babcock Short Story Contest Award: Corey Hutchins Haviliah Babcock Poetry Contest Award: Joshua Watson Descriptions of Awards Carey K. Smith, Jr. Award is presented to the senior who has demonstrated the highest qualities of leadership, scholarship, dedication and outstanding academic achievement. $250 is awarded to each student. Maximillian LaBorde Scholarship is presented to four juniors for outstanding achievement based on faculty recommendation and grade point ratio. $1000 is awarded to each student. J. Gordon Belser Scholarship is presented to three juniors for outstanding achievement in literature courses based on faculty recommendation and grade point ratio. $750 is awarded to each student. George Walker Waring Award is presented to two sophomores who have demonstrated particular ability for the study of English. $250 is awarded to each student. J. S. Reynolds Essay Contest Award is presented to the student who has written the best essay in an English Course as determined by faculty judges. $100 is awarded to the student. Havilah Babcock Short Story Contest Award is given to the student who has written the most outstanding short story as determined by faculty judges. $100 is awarded to the student. Havilah Babcock Poetry Contest Award is given to the student who has written the most outstanding poetry as determined by faculty judges. $100 is awarded to the student.
