Professor Gordon B. Smith, will present, Rethinking Russia: US-Russian Relations at a Turning Point.” Professor Smith, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Walker Institute of International and Area Studies, will analyze the past eight years of deterioration in US-Russian relations and offer suggestions for steps the Obama Administration could undertake leading to positive changes in the future.  Professor Smith is author or editor of 10 books and more than 50 articles and book chapters focusing on Russian politics, legal reform and foreign policy.

February 26-28, 2009
The 11th Annual Comparative Literature Conference, in collaboration with the Walker Institute presents, “The Futures of Human Rights:  Moral, Legal, and Political Cultures.”  Guest Speakers will include: Paul Kahn of Yale University (Law), Costas Douzinas of the University of London (Law), Chiara Bottici of the University of Florence (Philosophy), Attracta Ingram of the University of College, Dublin (Politics and International Relations), John Wallach of Cuny University (Political Science), John McGowan of the University of North Carolina (English), Samuel Moyn of Columbia University (History), and Daniel Rothenberg of Depaul (Law).

March 5-6, 2009
The 2nd Annual Southeast German Studies Workshop's panels will focus on “Cityscapes/Landscapes”, “Ethnicity,” and “The Senses.”  The keynote lecture will be presented by Dr. Claudia Koonz, Professor of History at Duke University.

March 22-26, 2009
The 53rd Annual Conference of the Comparative and International Education Society will be held in Charleston, SC and sponsored by USC’s Office of International and Comparative Education in the College of Education and the Walker Institute collaborating with the College of Charleston and Teachers College of Columbia University.
