About ISS
The mission of the Institute for Southern Studies is to foster the most advantageous use of the magnificent resources for the study of the American South at the University of South Carolina, which are among the greatest strength of the university and are rivalled by few other institutions. These resources include the rich collections of the South Caroliniana Library and McKissick Museum; ready access to other important research facilities such as the state archives; a strategic concentration of outstanding faculty specializing in the study of the South; and the special interest that the topic holds for students and friends of the university. The ISS interdisciplinary academic program connects undergraduates to these resources, and a variety of ISS scholarly initiatives connect the university to the international research community focused on the South.
