Director (Internal Search)

The Institute of Southern Studies, an internationally recognized leader in the field of regional studies, was founded in 1980 to promote the study of the American South by offering a challenging and engaging undergraduate curriculum; by acting as a gateway for scholars worldwide who want to study the region through the University's extraordinary resources; and by serving the greater South Carolina community through public programming that educates and inspires. The research and publications produced by Southern Studies faculty and research associates are frequently transformed into public programming. Through symposia, lectures, seminars, and media presentations, the Institute makes the most recent and best scholarship on the American South available not only to the academic community but to the general public.

This search is an internal one limited to full professors at the University of South Carolina - Columbia. With over 50 active affiliates, the individual may hold tenure at the rank of full professor in any of the departments of the University. Recruiting a senior faculty member to lead the Institute is a key step in ensuring its remarkable, continued success.

The deadline for submitting files is October 15, 2011. The Committee charged with reviewing candidates for this position will begin evaluating files after October 15, 2011, with the goal of presenting a short list to the Dean in late October. Joint Position: Associate Professor of History and Southern Studies

The Department of History and the Institute for Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina invite applications from outstanding scholars for a joint position at the level of Associate Professor with tenure. The person who fills this position will join one of the most vibrant Southern Studies programs in the nation and a History Department that the National Research Council recently ranked as one of the top fifteen doctoral programs at a public university in the United States and that also has a highly-regarded Public History MA program. Applicants should have a record of scholarly and teaching excellence in the area of Southern history and Southern Studies, the ability to teach a two-semester sequence in South Carolina history from 1670-present, and the ability to foster relationships both inside and outside of the academy. The holder of this position will teach two courses per year each in Southern Studies and History.
