1. The Articulation of Secular and Religious Discourse in Egypt. This monograph is a study of
religious discourse in the writings of modernist thinkers and of secular discourse in the writings
of scripturalists. Authors analyzed include Sayyid Qutb, Hasan Hanafi, Husayn Amin, and
Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, representing the spectrum of modern Egyptian social theory, from
scripturalism, phenomenology, radical modernism, and liberal modernism Articles on this topic
have been published in The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science,
International Journal of Middle East Studies, and Cultural Transition in the Middle East.
