Historical Linguistics Research Group (HLRG) -  Meets first Friday of each month.

The Historical Linguistics Research Group (HLRG) meets one Friday evening each month.  After a potluck dinner, there is a presentation with discussion.  Speakers include faculty and students of the Linguistics Program, as well as an occasional outside speaker.  The meetings are organized by Kurt Goblirsch in conjunction with Donald Cooper, Dorothy Disterheft, and Eric Holt.

SLA Reading Group
    (Anyone interested in Second Language Acquisition is welcome)

Topic: Incidental L2 Vocabulary Acquisition.
Activities:
Read two articles from the recent special issue of Studies in Second Language Acquisition (21:2, June 1999).  Larry LaFond will present the article by Paribakht and Wesche (195-224) and Barbara Hancin-Bhatt will present the article by Ellis and He (285-302).  All participants should read these articles and the intro and conclusion to the special issue (for background).

Activities:
Elena and Hunter will present articles about Ultimate Attainment in SLA.  All interested in SLA are welcome.   No previous experience necessary. The following articles can be found in TC Library, and also should be available now in Noreen's office:
1) "Ultimate Attainment in L2 Phonology" by Alene Moyer (Georgetown University) in SSLA, 1999, pp. 81-108.
2) "How Native is near-native? The issue of ultimate attainment in adult SLA" by Lydia White and Fred Genesee (McGill University) in Second Language Research, 1996, pp. 233-265.
Both should be on reserve with Noreen within the week.
Place: Lori Donath's House [Come to Loralee Donath's apartment at Blossom and Pickens.  (1600 Park Circle, #610). Walk up the front steps and look for Loralee's name on the sheet for the code (OR remember it is164) and punch the code into the pseudo-phone; She will answer and press a button which will let you in.  It sounds involved, but it's not that bad.  Take an elevator to the 6th Floor and look for 610.]
