• Students entering the Program
normally take LING 600 (Survey of Linguistics) in the Fall, and LING
610 (Introduction to Phonology) in the Spring of their first year.
Students who already have some background in Linguistics are encouraged
to also take LING 620 (Introduction to Syntax) in their first (Fall)
semester. Alternatively, LING 620 may be taken in the third (Fall)
semester.
• If a student wishes to include a non-LING in their program of study,
a
permission form must be filled
out, signed by the student's advisor, and filed with the program
office.
Comprehensive
examination:
Comprehensive examination:
Students who elect not to write a thesis must still pass a
comprehensive examination. Such students will be examined by a
committee of two core faculty members, typically including the faculty
mentor for the student's enhanced seminar paper and at least one
faculty member representing the student's special field. Upon
successful completion of an oral comprehensive examination, covering
general linguistics and the student's special field, the examiner will
inform the program's graduate director. Student should plan to
take the comprehensive examination as soon as possible, once they have
completed the three core course requirement (LING 600, LING 610, and
LING 620). For students who take these three courses in their
first year, this would be early in their third semester. For
students who complete their core courses in the third semester, this
would be at the beginning of their fourth (final) semester.
