A cognate in Linguistics for
Communication
Sciences & Disorders Ph.D. students
The purpose of a cognate in Linguistics is to provide
the Communication Sciences student with a foundation in the conceptual
bases of linguistic analysis, with a view towards incorporating
this foundation into his/her own research in Communication
Sciences. It is also expected that a student who completes
this minor would have enhanced employment prospects at any academic
institution in which Cognitive Science (or a connection between
Linguistics and Communication Sciences ) has developed a central
place in the graduate curriculum. The cognate requires 9 hours
of coursework, including one core course, plus two electives drawn
from the following list:
Core:
LING 600 Survey of Linguistics
Electives:
LING 504 Introduction to Spanish Linguistics
LING 567 Experimental Psycholinguistics
LING 710 Introduction to Phonology
LING 712 Phonological Theory
LING 715 Applied English Phonetics
LING 744 Language Contact Phenomena
LING 745 Language Variation
LING 840 Seminar in Language Variation
Note: Courses drawn from the list of Electives (above)
may also be used to satisfy some of the 18 hour course requirement
in COMD and related areas.
