A minor in Linguistics for Comparative Literature Ph.D. students

The Comparative Literature Program allows its graduate students to have a minor specialization in place of a third national literature, and the minor in Linguistics is designed to provide such an option.  A minor in Linguistics would be of particular benefit to a comparativist who is pursuing a specialization in theoretical approaches to language and literature, and would enable the student to expand his/her teaching profile to include courses in language study and general linguistics.  For a student concentrating in a particular national literature (e.g. French, German, or Spanish), a minor in Linguistics would provide a vehicle for gaining expertise in the linguistic analysis of a particular language or group of languages.

Although the minor specialization requirement for Comparative Literature students only requires 2 graduate courses in the discipline, students pursuing a Linguistics minor are strongly encouraged to consider taking LING 600 Survey of Linguistics BEFORE AND IN ADDITION TO two other LING courses.  In a few cases, LING 600 is a prerequisite to courses in the minor.  In all cases, the student who has had LING 600 will be better prepared for the other courses in the minor.  LING 600 is offered every Fall semester.

Core:

LING 600     Survey of Linguistics
