Linguistics student have an opportunity to integrate their expertise
in language/linguistics in the areas of writing and rhetoric. This
minor field would be particularly useful for a student specializing
in ESL/SLA, who anticipates a research focus on L2 writing. It would
also be beneficial in terms of enhanced employment prospects, since
ESL instruction so often involves a heavy writing component.
The Composition and Rhetoric minor should consist
(as all secondary fields) of four courses. The core course in this
specialization is ENGL 790 Survey of Composition Studies, and while
this course is not a prerequisite for any of the other Comp/Rhet
courses, it is expected that it should be included in the course

ENGL 790 Survey of Composition Studies
Other Courses:
ENGL 791 Introduction to Reseach on Written
Composition
ENGL 792 Classical Rhetoric
ENGL 793 Rhetorical Theory and Practice, Medieval

The purpose of a minor in Medieval and Early Modern
English Literature is to provide the Linguistics student an opportunity
to augment their specialization in language/linguistics with expertise
in the area of literary and textual analysis. This minor field would
be particularly useful for a student specializing in historical linguistics,
who anticipates a research focus on English or Germanic philology.
It would also be beneficial in terms of enhanced employment prospects,
since employment for Linguists in English departments typically involves
the ability to teach history of the English language (which itself
is enhanced through a familiarity with Old, Middle, and Early Modern
English texts).

minor consists (as all secondary fields) of four courses. The following
