Opportunities
for Funding
A variety of funding opportunities are available
for Ph.D. students in the Linguistics Program. These include teaching
assistantships, research and staff assistantships, and laboratory
assistantships. Many of our doctoral students have held teaching
assistantships in the English Department, where they are often enlisted
to teach Freshman Composition and Literature to international undergraduates
and to serve as consultants in the English Department's writing
center. Some of our international Ph.D. students have supported
themselves by teaching in the foreign language departments. There
are also a number of opportunities for support at the English Programs
for Internationals, at the Foreign Language Learning Center, and
at writing centers in the College of Engineering and the School
of Business Administration. Funding opportunities such as these
are arranged through the Linguistics Program on behalf of our students.
Because there are more applicants than there are support slots,
funding opportunities are competitive and it is of great importance
that applicants get their applications complete as early as possible.
This allows applicants to be maximally competitive for funding.
Listed below are several special opportunities beyond what is described
above.
A list of potential funding opportunities and fellowship information
can be viewed through the Graduate School webpage. Click
here for detailed information.

Because the Center works with many non-native speakers of English,
this assistantship would be particularly attractive to a linguistics

writing.
