Opportunities for Funding

A variety of funding opportunities are available for Ph.D. students in the Linguistics Program. These include teaching assistantships, research and staff assistantships, and laboratory assistantships. Many of our doctoral students have held teaching assistantships in the English Department, where they are often enlisted to teach Freshman Composition and Literature to international undergraduates and to serve as consultants in the English Department's writing center. Some of our international Ph.D. students have supported themselves by teaching in the foreign language departments. There are also a number of opportunities for support at the English Programs for Internationals, at the Foreign Language Learning Center, and at writing centers in the College of Engineering and the School of Business Administration. Funding opportunities such as these are arranged through the Linguistics Program on behalf of our students. Because there are more applicants than there are support slots, funding opportunities are competitive and it is of great importance that applicants get their applications complete as early as possible. This allows applicants to be maximally competitive for funding. Listed below are several special opportunities beyond what is described above.

A list of potential funding opportunities and fellowship information can be viewed through the Graduate School webpage. Click here for detailed information.

The African American Professors Program

The African American Professors Program is a program sponsored by the University of South Carolina, the Kellogg Foundation (funding pending), and the SC Higher Education Commission to recruit and train African American students for the professoriate. It is expected that students will complete their programs of study within a three-year period. First-year professor interns will receive graduate assistantship of $15,000; second-year interns, $16,500; third-year interns, $18,000. In addition, interns will also receive a limited travel budget. Interested applicants should apply for graduate study in Linguistics, and contact the African American Professors Program (USC, 916 Carolina Plaza, Columbia, SC 29208 / phone 803-777-5553 / toll free 888-211-4531) or visit their website at: http://www.ed.sc.edu/aapp/index.html

Ph.D. in Linguistics with minor specialization in English Composition and Rhetoric

A graduate assistantship is being made available through the Center for Business Communication (CBC) at the Darla Moore School of Business, to a student pursuing a Ph.D. in Linguistics with a primary concentration in the area of Second Language Acquisition and ESL, and a secondary concentration in Composition and Rhetoric. Because the Center works with many non-native speakers of English, this assistantship would be particularly attractive to a linguistics student whose research interests lie in the field of second language writing.

Ph.D. in Linguistics with a minor specialization in Hispanic Literature

The Spanish Graduate Program and the Linguistics Program have joined efforts to provide support for a student who wishes to train for a career as a Spanish language linguist in a department of Spanish language and literature. Support consists of graduate teaching assistantship with duties that would include teaching undergraduate Spanish and/or working in the Language Learning Center.

Ph.D. in Linguistics with a minor specialization in French Literature

The French Graduate Program and the Linguistics Program have joined efforts to provide support for a student who wishes to train for a career as a French language linguist in a department of French language and literature. Support consists of graduate teaching assistantship with duties that would include teaching undergraduate French and/or working in the Language Learning Center.
