Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Linguistics Students!
THINGS YOU’LL WANT TO KNOW BEFORE THE 97-98 ACADEMIC YEAR
STARTS
Comprehensive Exams
The biggest news for both incoming and returning students in the
USC Linguistics Program is the change in the policies concerning
the design and administration of comprehensive exams at the M.A.,
Doctoral Candidacy, and Ph.D. levels. So all students can understand
how the new policies will work, the complete text of the policy
is attached to the back of this newsletter and extra copies are
available on the door of the Linguistics Program Office. Read the
policy carefully. If you have any questions or are not sure how
it may affect you, speak to your advisor.
GSLING
The first meeting of the Graduate Student Linguists At USC (GSLING)
will be on Friday, August 22, at 3:30pm in the first floor lounge
of the Welsh Humanities Building. There are a lot of things going
on and lot of things to talk about. If you can’t come, send
a message to Rick Hallet in his box at the English Department or
at rwhalle@vm.sc.edu and we’ll keep you apprised of all the
goings on.
The first get-together
The first Linguistics Program get-together will be a potluck dinner
on Saturday, August 23 at the house of Carol Myers-Scotton. The
exact time and directions on how to get there will be available
on the door of the P4rogram office and will be posted on LINGGRAD.
