WHAT IS PEPS?
PEPS is a psychosocial support program for children with sickle cell disease (SCD) and their families.
We work in cooperation with the Children's Rehabilitative Services Sickle Cell Clinics at the Department
of Health and Environmental Control and the Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Palmetto Health-Richland.
We provide:
- routine screenings for neurocognitive, social, and behavioral development in young children
- school advocacy, support for parents
- educational gifts for children with SCD.
Our routine screenings for developmental issues that affect children's quality of life are offered at
local clinics for SCD care. We believe early identification and early intervention can prevent risk
factors from turning into health-related problems.
Our team has identified a number of issues for children with chronic health conditions in schools, including
the lack of information many teachers have about chronic health conditions such as SCD. We offer consultation
services with an educational expert so that parents can learn more about how to work with schools on behalf
of their child. We also have developed a brochure that can be downloaded for parents and teachers to better
understand school issues:

We also send educational books and magazines to children in our program to promote an interest in reading.
