Carl D. Evans has been a member of the faculty since 1974. He teaches and does research in Old Testament and ancient Israelite history, religion, and culture.

Evans received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. He worked in the area of Bible (Old Testament concentration) and ancient Near Eastern studies.

Co-editor of Scripture in Context: Essays on the Comparative Method (Pickwick, 1980), Evans has also publised a variety of articles, essays, and book chapters on aspects of Israelite history, religion, and culture. See his c.v. for details. He is currently working on a book tentatively titled Encountering the Other: A Social History on Ethnic and Religious Diversity in Ancient Judah. This study charts the changing demographics in Judah during the late monarchic, exilic, and post-exilic periods and examines how various groups responded to the challenges of ethnic and religious diversity caused by the population changes.

Evans has been active in ecumenical and interfaith affairs in the United Methodist Church, in South Carolina, and the region for many years. Since 1991 he has directed Partners in Dialogue, an interfaith project that promotes understanding and cooperation between the diverse faith groups in South Carolina, including Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Unitarian Universalists, Baha'is, Sikhs, and Native Americans. Partners in Dialogue is sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies.
