Congratulations to the USC Baseball Team: National Champions 2011!

Congratulations once again to all the students on the USC Baseball team for its back-to-back national championship!

 


Congratulations to Lala Steelman for Counted Out!

Lala Steelman and her co-authors of the book, Counted Out (Russell Sage 2010), received the William J. Goode award of the ASA, the Distinguished Book Award of the Midwest Sociological Society, and the Distinguished Book Award of the North Central Sociological Society.

 


Congratulations to the USC Baseball Team: National Champions 2010!

Sociology is very proud to announce that six of its majors are on USC's National Champion Baseball team: Robert Beary, Jose Mata, Matt Price, Bobby Haney, Adam Matthews, and Blake Cooper. We applaud our six young men and our baseball team for their achievement!

 


Congratulations to Shane Thye for Social Commitments in a Depersonalized World

Shane Thye received the Outstanding Recent Contribution to the Literature Award, Sociology of Emotions Section of the American Sociological Association, for Social Structure and Emotion (edited by Jody Clay-Warner and Dawn Robinson); the 2010 Coleman Award for Best Book, Rationality and Society Section of the American Sociological Association, and a 2010 Honorable Mention, Sociology of Emotions Section of the American Sociological Association, for Social Commitments in a Depersonalized World (with Edward Lawler and Jeongkoo Yoon).  

 


Social Psychology Specialty Ranked #4 Nationally 2009!

In April 2009, USC Sociology's graduate training in Social Psychology was ranked among America's top elite programs in U.S. News & World Report's latest edition of America's Best Graduate Schools. The #4 ranking (up from #12 in 2005) also makes it the fastest-rising social psychology program in the nation.  

 


 

Sociology Students at the Beijing Olympics 2008!

 

The Sociology Department is pleased and proud to note that several former and current sociology students at the 2008 Summer Olympic games in Beijing, China.

Former Gamecock Chelsea Hammond narrowly missed medaling in her first Olympic appearance after placing fourth in the women's long jump final. Also in track & field, Aleen Bailey competed in the finals of the 4x100m.

Congratulations to Michelle Deming!

Graduate student Michelle Deming won the Social Science Award from the Women's Health Research Forum, USC School of Medicine, 2011, for her submission: Deming ME, Covan EK, Swan SC and Billings DL., "Exploring Rape Myths, Gendered Norms, Group Processing and the Social Context of Rape among College Women: A Qualitative Analysis." http://whrf.med.sc.edu/pastrf.asp

 

Congratulations to Ashley Harrell & Alison McLetchie

 

Graduate student Ashley Harrell won the best student paper award from the Rationality & Society section of the American Sociological Association for her sole-authored paper: “Do Religious Cognitions Promote Prosociality?”, 2010.

 

Graduate student Alison McLetchie won the Priestley Social Justice Paper Award for 2010 for her paper "Don't interfere with husband and wife business: Domestic violence in Trinidad and Tobago."

 

Congratulations to our Graduate Student Teaching Award winners 2010 

Congratulations to Jennifer Triplett and Alison McLetchie for each winning a Graduate Student Teaching Award from the Sociology Department in recognition of their outstanding teaching and excellence in the classroom. 

 

Congratulations to Shannon McDonough

Graduate student Shannon McDonough was the 1st place Winner of the 2008 SSSP Educational Problems Division's Student Paper Competition for her paper "Safety Cultivates Fear?: The Unintended Consequences of School Surveillance Measures." Shannon will present the paper at the SSSP meeting in Boston.
 

Congratulations to Naomi Kolberg, Matt Cazzessus, Kyle Irwin, and Tucker McGrimmon

At the 2008 Graduate Student Day, several sociology students were honored! Matt Cazessus and Naomi Kolberg won the 1st place award in the Social Sciences Poster Competition! Also, Kyle Irwin and Tucker McGrimmon were recognized as the winners of our departmental award for best co-authored paper. Congratulations to all! 

Lala Steelman wins 2007 Outstanding Publication Award from the ASA Aging Section

Lala Steelman, along with Brian Powell, Indiana University, and Robert M. Carini, University of Louisville, received the 2007 Outstanding Publication Award from the ASA section on Aging and the Life Course for their co-authored publication, "Advancing Age, Advantaged Youth: Parental Age and the Transmission of Resources to Children," published in Social Forces, March 2006. 

Congratulations to Brent, Mathieu, Shane, David, and Irena

Brent Simpson, Mathieu Deflem, Shane Thye, and David Willer received Two Thumbs Up Awards from the Office of Student Disability Services, University of South Carolina, 2007. Irena Stepanikova received the S. Dornbusch Award for Social Psychology, 2006. 

Congratulations to Lisa Dilks

At the Graduate Student Day of 2007, Lisa Dilks won first place in Oral Research Presentation in the Category Humanities, Social Sciences and Social Issues for her paper, "Influencing Economic Theory with Sociological Assumptions: Lessons from Survivor on Discrimination." At the Graduate Student Day, also, Suzanne Sutphin was recognized as the winner of our departmental award for best co-authored paper. Congratulations to both! 

Congratulations to Peter Lawrence and Kyle Irwin

Graduate students Peter Lawrence and Kyle Irwin won the Department's award for outstanding co-authored paper (written with faculty member Brent Simpson). The paper is now published in Social Psychology Quarterly. Peter Lawrence also won the outstanding volunteer award at USC, 2003. 

Pamela Emanuelson wins USC Graduate School's Outstanding Thesis Award 2006

Doctoral student Pamela Emanuelson in our Department won the USC Graduate School's Outstanding Thesis Award for 2006, in the social sciences, business, and education category. Pamela also received an award for the Best Graduate Student Paper in Rationality and Society from the American Sociological Association, 2005. She is the first student from USC to receive this award. Pamela has worked primarily on Network Exchange Theory. "Pamela is a brilliant theoretician and one of the most promising young sociologists in the country," said Dr. David Willer. 

Congratulations to Virginia Martin, John Schutt, and Sangmoon Kim

At the Graduate Student day of 2003, Virginia Martin received one of only two of USC’s university-wide awards for her dissertation, which she finished with Dr. Shelly Smith.At the Graduate Student Day, the winners of our department awards —John Shutt (for single-authored paper) and Sangmoon Kim (for co-authored paper)— were also honored. Congratulations to all!

David Willer receives the 2002 James S. Coleman Award

The Sociology Department is pleased and proud to announce that our colleague David Willer has received the 2002 James S. Coleman Award from the Rationality and Society section of the American Sociological Association. Dave received the award for his work, Network Exchange Theory (Westport, CT: Praeger, 1999).
