People 


Barry Markovsky was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Skövde, Sweden, during the Fall. 

Brent Simpson was promoted to Associate Professor of Sociology. 

Christine Fountain joined the Department from the University of Washington, Seattle. 

David Willer became a USC Louise Fry Scudder Professor.

Irena Stepanikova joined the Department from Stanford University. 

 

Invited Talks 


Christine Fountain spoke about “Networks in the New Economy,” Department of Sociology and Center for the Study of Complex Systems, University of Michigan. 

Brent Simpson spoke about “Are Blacks Less Trusting than Whites?,” University of North Carolina-Charlotte. 

Mathieu Deflem delivered talks on “Policing Post-War Iraq," Departments of Law and Sociology & Anthropology, Carleton University, Canada; “Global Counter-Terrorism,” Sociological Association of Turkey, Ankara, Turkey; and “International Police Cooperation Against Terrorism,” Advanced Research Workshop on “Understanding and Responding to Terrorism,” Washington, DC.

Shane Thye spoke on “Why Smart People Believe Weird Things,” Central South Carolina MENSA, West Columbia, SC; “The Status Value Theory of Power,” Cornell University; with Edward J. Lawler and Jeongkoo Yoon, “Social Exchange as a Source of Social Order,” Department of Organizational Behavior, Harvard University and, with Edward Lawler and Jeongkoo Yoon, “Social Exchange and the Maintenance of Order in Status Stratified Systems,” University of Georgia, Athens, GA. 

 

Conference Participations


At the meeting of the American Sociological Association, our Department was extremely well represented with presentations by David Willer, Pamela Emanuelson, Kyle Irwin, Tucker McGrimmon, Brent Simpson, Pamela Ray Koch, Lala Steelman, Lisa Dilks, Barry Markovsky, Mathieu Deflem, Suzanne Sutphin, Patrick Nolan, Wenqian Dai, Shane Thye, Elena Vesselinov, and Matthew A. Cazessus. 

At the Southern Sociological Society meeting in New Orleans, presentations were made by Elena Vesselinov and Lala Steelman.  

Christine Fountain participated in International Sunbelt Social Network Conference in Vancouver, Canada.

David Willer, with Richard Chacon and Yamilette Chacon, delivered a talk, “When Can Leaders Act Like Rulers?” at the 18th Annual Group Process, Montreal. 

Elena Vesselinov chaired a panel at the Council of European Studies Conference in Chicago, where she also presented a paper. 

Kyle Irwin, Brent Simpson, and Tucker McGrimmon delivered a talk, “Sympathy, Fear and Greed,” at the Social Structure and Emotions Conference in Athens, GA. 

Lala Steelman, with Pamela R. Koch and others spoke at the Annual Sociology of Education Conference in Alisomar, CA.

  

Grants


Brent Simpson and Barry Markovsky received a National Science Foundation grant for research on “Power and Perception in Networks.”

Elena Vesselinov received funding from the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs, and was also recipient of a Research and Productive Scholarship Award from the Office of Research and Health Sciences, University of South Carolina. 

Irena Stepanikova received funding from the University of South Carolina Research Opportunity Program. 

Suzanne Sutphin and Brent Simpson (PI) received a Doctoral Dissertation Research grant from the National Science Foundation. 

 

Publications


Brent Simpson published articles in Rationality and Society, and Social Forces; and, with Kyle Irwin and Peter Lawrence in Social Psychology Quarterly.

David Willer, with Pamela Emanuelson, contributed to Peter Burke (ed.) Contemporary Social Psychological Theories, Stanford University Press; and with Casey Borch, Dave wrote in Journal of Mathematical Sociology. 

Elena Vesselinov published in the Community and Urban Sociology Section Newsletter, and in Paths of Urban Transformation, ed. Frank Eckardt. Peter Lang Pub. Group. 

Irena Stepanikova wrote in Social Science and Medicine, and with others, in Journal of Health and Social Behavior. 

Ken Shin published in Korean American Economy, Los Angeles, CA, Korean American Economic Development Center.

Mathieu Deflem published in Justice Quarterly, in The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and in Opinión Jurídica; with Suzanne Sutphin in Sociological Focus; with J. Eagle Shutt, in The Handbook of Information Security; with Sanjay Marwah, in Sociological Theory and Criminological Research; with Kyle Irwin and with Brian Hudak in Encyclopedia of American Civil Rights and Liberties. Mathieu also edited Sociological Theory and Criminological Research: Views from Europe and the United States.
