Shane
Thye was promoted to Professor of Sociology.
Barry
Markovsky was a Visiting Professor, Workshop on Group-focused
Enmity, during the Summer in Bad Laasphe, Germany.
Invited Talks
Barry
Markovsky spoke on the Scholars Day Lecture,
University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC.
Patrick
Nolan delivered the Bruce Mayhew Memorial Lecture on “Phantasmagorical?
Reflections on Bruce Mayhew and Structural Sociology,” University
of South Carolina.
Shane
Thye delivered a lecture on network indices of power to the
Institute for Social Network Analysis at Cornell University. He also
traveled to South Korea to speak to the School of Business
Administration at Ajou University regarding status characteristics
in organizations.
Conference Participations
At
the meeting of the American Sociological Association, our Department
was again very well represented with presentations by Barry
Markovsky, Mathieu Deflem, Patrick Nolan, Brent Simpson, Lala
Steelman, Shane Thye, Elena Vesselinov, David Willer, as well as
many of our best graduate students, including Jennifer Triplett,
Shannon McDonough, Lisa Dilks, Mike Steketee, Kyle Irwin, Suzanne
Sutphin, Nick Berigan, Matt Cazessus, Lucy Dai.
Barry
Markovsky, Brent Simpson, Irena Stepanikova, Shane Thye, and David
Willer organized the 20th
Annual Group Processes Conference in New York City.
Brent
Simpson, with Robb Willer, spoke at the 12th International
Conference on Social Dilemmas, Seattle, WA.
Lala
Carr Steelman, Pamela Ray Koch, Sophia Catsambis, and Lynn Mulkey,
presented a paper at the American Educational Research Association,
Chicago.
Irena
Stepanikova spoke at the Pacific Sociological Association Meeting,
Oakland, CA.
Elena
Vesselinov, Elena presented at the meeting of the American
Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, Harvard
University. She also spoke at the meeting of the Urban
Affairs Association, Seattle, WA; and with Renaud Le Goix, at the
4th International Conference of the Research Network Private Urban
Governance and Gated Communities, Paris, France.
Grants
Brent
Simpson, with Robb Willer, received a National Science Foundation
grant for research on "Status and the Organization of
Collective Action."
Kyle
Irwin and Brent Simpson received as Doctoral Dissertation Research
grant on "Norm Conformity in Collective Action Groups"
from the National Science Foundation.
Christine
Witkowski and Shane Thye received as Doctoral Dissertation Research
grant for research on "A Theory and Experimental Test of
Collective Action Participation” from the National Science
Foundation.
Shelley
Smith received an Associate Professor Professional Development Award
from the College of Arts and Sciences, University of South
Carolina.

David
Willer and Henry Walker published their book, Building Experiments:
Testing Social Theory. Stanford CA: Stanford University Press. The
two also published a chapter in the book, Laboratory
Experiments in the Social Sciences. Elsevier.
Mathieu Deflem edited the book, Sociologists in a Global Age: Biographical Perspectives. Ashgate. Mathieu
also wrote an article, with Aytül
Kasapoglu and Dennis S. Mileti, in the Journal of Homeland Security;
and he contributed to the book, Understanding and Responding to Terrorism,
the journal Sociation Today, the Encyclopedia of Law and Society:
American and Global Perspectives, the Encyclopedia of Police Science,
and the Encyclopedia of Globalization; and with Brian Hudak and with Kyle Irwin,
he wrote in Organized Crime: An International Encyclopedia.
Brent
Simpson, with Kimmo Eriksson, published in Journal of Judgment and
Decision Making.
Jimy
Sanders wrote in Social Science Research.
Barry
