Lala Steelman became the new Chair of the Department.
Brent Simpson and Mathieu Deflem were awarded a sabbatical leave
during the 2008-2009 year.
Brent Simpson became Editorial Board Member of Social Psychology
Quarterly.
Shane Thye joined the Editorial Board of the Korean Management
Review.
Invited Talks
Mathieu Deflem delivered invited lectures at the University of
Coimbra in Portugal, and spoke at the Université de Montréal in
Canada.
Conference Participations
Our Department
was very well represented at the annual meeting of the American
Sociological Association in Boston, with presentations by very many of our best graduate students
and faculty.
Shannon McDonough and Mathieu Deflem presented a paper at the SSSP
meeting in Boston, where Shannon also delivered a talk from her
paper that won the student award of the educational problems
division.
Eric Gladstone, Kyle Irwin, and Brent Simpson presented at the
annual meeting of the Evolution and Human Behavior Society.
Grants
Brent
Simpson received a Wenner-Gren Foundation Fellowship (with Kimmo
Eriksson).
With graduate student Eric Gladstone, Michael Schillaci, and Adam
Teed, Brent Simpson received a grant from the McCausland Center for
Brain Imaging.
Publications
Brent Simpson and Robb Willer published in Social Psychology
Quarterly. With Tucker McGrimmon, Brent also wrote in Social
Networks.
Shane Thye, along with Edward J. Lawler and Jeongkoo Yoon, published
in the American Sociological Review.
David Willer and Pamela Emanuelson wrote an article in the Journal
of Mathematical Sociology.
Patrick Nolan published with several graduate students (Kyle Irwin,
Jennifer Triplet, Shannon McDonough, and Emily Guerrero-Arnold) in
Sociation Today. With Gerhard Lenski, he also has a new edition of
Human Societies: An Introduction to Macrosociology, and alone he
wrote Studying Human Societies: A Primer and Guide, and a review
essay in a symposium on U.S. electoral politics in Contemporary
Sociology.
Mathieu Deflem published Sociology of Law (Cambridge University
Press) and edited Surveillance and Governance (JAI Press). With
Richard Featherstone, Suzanne Sutphin, and Yunqing Li, Mathieu also
published in the International Journal of Police Science and
Management.
Irena Stepanikova and Karen Cook published in Health Services
Research.
