Directed by MA student Jennifer Goff, The Book of Liz is an outrageous comedy from the creators of the popular titles The Santaland Diaries and Strangers With Candy.
The Book of Liz tells the tale of Sister Elizabeth Donderstock, the brains behind the famed Cluster Haven Cheeseballs – the main export of a small Squeamish community in rural Pennsylvania. But when her quiet little world starts closing in around her, she sets off on a journey to find herself… not to mention some flamboyant waiters, a giant peanut and a llama. With four actors portraying fifteen characters, David and Amy Sedaris’ The Book of Liz is an outrageous comedy with heart… and gouda.
Director Jennifer Goff is a founding member of The Distracted Globe Theatre Company of Greenville, SC, for whom she directed Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park this summer. Goff plans to pursue a PhD in Theatre after her expected completion of the USC MA program this year.
“Leave it to the Sedaris family to cram so much into such a short evening of theatre! It’s a one act, but it has so much going on,” Goff says. “It’s been a really great challenge for me and for the undergrad actors to be able to wrap our minds around these larger than life characters. And I’m pretty sure we’ll never look at cheeseballs the same way again.”
Appearing in the production are undergraduate students Anne Reid (playing Sister Donderstock), Rocco Thompson, Brittany Price Anderson and Jake Mesches.
The USC Lab Theatre is located on Wheat Street in the Booker T. Washington building, across from Blatt P.E. Center.
