Professor Nic Ularu's original play, Hieronymus, centered on the fantastical art and life of 15th-century painter Hieronymus Bosch, premieres at the world-renowned La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club January 20, 2012.   The production runs through January 29.

Written and directed by Ularu, Hieronymus is a visual performance that recompose from a puzzle of situations, the life and work of Hieronymus Bosch, revealing the condition of the artist in relation to society and his private life. Using elements of black theater, video projections and giant puppets, Hieronymus recreates Bosch’s grotesque and tragic imaginary in a fantastic universe that incorporates the sacred, the profane, the symbol and the metaphor of his paintings.

Featured in the cast are theatre professor Richard Jennings and associate professor Park Bucker; MFA alums Paul Kaufmann, Jen Burry and Ryan Krause; and Paul Kelly.

Scenic Design is by Heather Abraham; Costume Design is by professor Lisa Martin Stuart; Lighting Design is by MFA alum Aaron Pelzek; Video Design is by Simon Tarr, Sound Design is by assistant professor Walter Clissen. The Production Manager is K. Dale White and the Stage Manager is Christine Jacky

Since its founding in 1961, La MaMa E.T.C. has developed an international reputation for fostering new theatrical works, and served as the launching pad for such prominent writers as Lanword Wilson, Sam Shepard and Harvey Fierstein.

Ularu has staged several original works at La MaMa, including The Cherry Orchard Sequel (a 2008 NY Times Critics Pick) and The System (2009).  Ularu won an Obie Award for scenic design for the Talking Band's production of Painted Snake in a Painted Chair, which ran at La MaMa in 2003.

Hieronymus was made possible by a Creative Grant from the University of SC Provost's  Office and through support from the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Theatre and Dance.
