Comparative Literature & Women's Studies
In lieu of two graduate courses in a third national literature, doctoral
students in Comparative Literature
may wish to seek a specialization in Women's Studies. Providing doctoral
students in comparative literature with a grounding in feminist theory
and interdisciplinary methodology, this option would be useful for students
interested in women's writing, cultural studies, contemporary theory, or
in multiple intersection of race, class, and gender in literary production
and practice.
The following two core courses in Women's Studies would fulfill
the third-field requirement in the Comparative Literature doctoral program:
-
WOST 701 Feminist Theory
-
WOST 702 Issues and Methods in Women's Studies Research
In addition, Ph.D. students in Comp Lit can earn a Graduate Certificate
in Women's Studies by taking just one more course beyond what they would
take anyway for their Ph.D. Because up to three courses from the
student's major field can be applied toward the certificate, and WOST 701
and 702 are required for the women's studies minor, only WOST 797, (Research
Seminar) is needed to fulfill the requirements for the WOST certificate.
Details of this option will vary, depending on the student's particular
program of study and with the national literatures chosen for the first
and second fields. Examples of courses eligible to count toward the certificate
may include the following:
-
ENGL / WOST 737 British Women Writers
-
ENGL / WOST 738 American Women Writers
-
WOST / GINT 704 Political Theory and Feminism
-
WOST / GEOG 709 Women Explorers and Travelers
-
HIST 764 History of American Women SPAN 769 Hispanic Women Writers
-
RELG 794W Women's Spirituality
-
CPLT 880 or 881 (Depending on the seminar topic being taught)
-
CPLT 703 (Depending on the type of contemporary theory being taught)
Additional courses are offered each semester as "topics" courses.
For a complete list of graduate courses see the Graduate Bulletin for Women's Studies.
