Educational Psychology & Women's Studies
Students in the Department of
Educational Psychology seeking Ph.D. degrees in Educational Psychology,
Educational Research, and in Foundations of Education are given the opportunity
to select a cognate area of study that is comprised of at least 12 hours.
In keeping with the mission of the department to advance knowledge and
best practices in the field of education as well as produce leaders who
improve all levels of education a cognate in Women's Studies opens directions
and perspectives not available in a single department. It offers students
unique possibilities in interdisciplinary scholarship and practice and
prepares them for the nuances and complexities of issues of gender, class,
and race in their professional settings. Cognate courses may be Women's
Studies courses, courses cross-listed with Women's Studies, or courses
within the department that focus on issues of race, class, and gender.
Students may petition Women's Studies to accept courses not listed with
these foci in the catalog, but are being taught with focus on these issues.
The following Women's Studies courses might be used to comprise a cognate:
-
WOST 701 Feminist Theory
-
WOST 702 Issues and Methods in Women's Studies Research
-
WOST 704/GINT 704 Political Theory and Feminism
-
WOST 709/GEOG 709 Women Explorers and Travelers

-
WOST 796 Special Topics in Women's Studies
-

-

Additional special topics courses in Women's Studies are offered each
semester.

little as two additional classes. Of the total eighteen hours required
for the certificate, nine hours must include the following courses:
-
WOST 701 (Feminist Theory)
