English & Women's Studies
Ph.D. students in English and
American Literature can choose to do a minor in Women's Studies. The purpose
of such a minor is to provide students with a grounding in feminist theory
and interdisciplinary methodology. The minor would be useful for students
interested in women's writing, cultural studies, contemporary theory, or
in the multiple intersections of race, class, and gender in literary production
and practice.
The minor in Women's Studies consists of a minimum of three courses. Two in Women's Studies:
-
WOST 701 Feminist Theory
-
WOST 702 Issues and Methods in Women's Studies Research
And at least one of the following courses in the English Department:
-
ENGL / WOST 737 British Women Writers
-
ENGL / WOST 738 American Women Writers
-
A relevant Special Topics course approved by the English Department
Aditional courses are offered each semester as "topics" courses.
The Graduate Certificate Program in Women's Studies is an 18-hour program consisting of three required courses (WOST 701, 702, and 797) and three electives. Students can earn a Ph.D.
in English and American Literature with a Women's Studies minor and a certificate
in Women's Studies by taking just one course (WOST 797) beyond the English
courses she or he would take anyway, as part of their doctoral program.
For a complete list of graduate courses see the Graduate Bulletin for Women's Studies.
