Major in African American Studies


The interdisciplinary major in African American Studies is designed to assist students in developing facility in several related disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities in order to gain a deeper understanding of the culture, experience, and contemporary situation of the African diaspora. A specific course of study will be designed to meet the needs of each student accepted for the program. Students interested in the major should consult with a member of the Faculty Curriculum Committee on African American Studies.

Program Requirements

A total of 120 credit hours are required for a BA in African American Studies.
    1. General Education Requirements (53-62 hours)

    2. Major Requirements (30 hours)
    The student must complete the following courses, which are included in the total required 30 hours. A grade of C or above is required for the course to count toward the BA degree in African American Studies

    • AFRO 201 Introduction to African American Studies before 1900 (3 hours)
    • AFRO 202 Introduction to African American Studies after 1900 (3 hours)
    • Any 300-level AFRO approved course (3 hours)
    • AFRO 498 or 499, Senior Seminar (3 hours)
    • 3 approved courses in the humanities (e.g., history or English) (9 hours)
    • 3 approved courses in the social sciences (e.g., government and international studies or sociology) (9 hours)

Bayard Rustin

(Mar. 17, 1912 - Aug. 24, 1987)
Civil Rights activist in the 1960's. He organized the March on Washington (1963) and worked with Dr. King on techniques of non-violent resistance. In later life he was an advocate for gay and lesbian causes.
