Interested in African American Studies beyond the Bachelor degree?
Many colleges and universities will name their programs in different ways: African World Studies, Africana Studies, and African Diaspora Studies are just a sample of different names. The following schools are a few that have master level or doctoral programs with a dedicated focus to the interdisciplinary study of African American life.

Mary Edmonia Lewis
(Jul. 4, 1845 - 1911)
First African American woman to gain international acclaim as a sculptor. The daughter of an African American father and Native American mother, she was admitted to Oberlin College in Ohio, one of the first higher learning schools in the United States to admit women of different races. In 1865 she went to study in Rome and within ten years her works were selling for large sums of money. In addition to her portraits and figures, she did work which made strong social and political statements; such as her sculpture, "Forever Free" an African-American couple in broken chains after the Civil War.
