Althea Gibson

(Aug. 25, 1927 - Sep. 28, 2003)
Born in Silver, South Carolina, she was the first African American woman to be a competitor on the world tennis tour, the first to win a Grand Slam title in 1956 and the first black person to win a title at Wimbledon with her partner, Jewish Englishwoman Angela Buxton. In 1958, Gibson was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year. She is sometimes referred to as "the Jackie Robinson of tennis" for breaking the "color barrier".
