The mission of the African American Studies Program is to provide students with the best possible understanding of race and the African American experience, as well as the dynamics of the African Diaspora. Through the use of broad-based interdisciplinary approaches, the program will develop a student's ability to engage in analytical reasoning and critical inquiry and will prepare them to become agile thinkers and top-performing leaders in a wide range of vocations, professional programs, and academic graduate programs.

Tuskegee Airmen
( founded 1941-)
A unit of the first African American pilots, the 99th Fighter Squadron activated at the noted Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, part of the all-Black 332nd Fighter Group of the US Army Air Corps during WWII. The 99th Fighter Squadron was awarded two Distinguished Unit Citations; the Tuskegee Airmen were awarded several Silver Stars, 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 8 Purple Hearts, 14 Bronze Stars and 744 Air Medals.
