INFORMATION ON APPLYING TO GRADUATE PROGRAM
DEADLINE for Applications is FEBRUARY 1
Applications are accepted to begin FALL semesters only
Thank you for your interest in our Anthropology program at the University of South Carolina. Please note that as of
Fall 2005, the department offers both a masters and a doctorate program. The
requirements below are for the masters program. We will be updating this page to
include the doctorate information soon.
Requirements:
You must be sure to submit a completed application form, two letters of reference, transcripts from all previous college work, a
term paper, which shows your writing skills (preferably your area of interest), and
scores on the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). While our standards are flexible,
we particularly seek students' whose GRE scores fall above 600 on each of the three
parts. We give greatest weight to the analytical reasoning score. We look closely
at the letters of reference and grades, life experiences, and writing samples of
students with lower scores, for evidence that they will be able to complete our
program. Many such students are admitted each year.
In addition to this material we request that you send a statement of 200-500 words
describing your interest in studying anthropology at the graduate level at USC. In your statement please indicate if you are
interested in studying with a particular faculty member. Please relate
your interests as specifically as you can to the emphasis of our program: cultural,
linguistic, archaeology, biocultural. If your interests overlap these areas please
direct your letter toward this.
This statement, along with your writing sample, should be sent directly to the
Anthropology Department; the originals of all other materials should go to the
Graduate School, but please, to the extent possible, have copies of these other
materials, including letters of reference and unofficial transcripts, sent directly
to the Anthropology Department office. This is very important to avoid delays in our
consideration of your application.
The deadline for submitting your application and all supporting materials is February 1. Please note that the Department of
Anthropology offers several
assistantships for graduate students, but that your application must be completed by February 1st for you to be considered for one of these.
You should also write directly to the Financial Aid Office here at the
University for other financial aid information or call 803-777-8134.
If you have any questions concerning the application process or any aspect of the
program, please feel free to contact Joanna Casey (Graduate Director) or Cat Keegan
(Administrative Assistant - Graduate Students).
