In Spring 2006, Susan Hogue, Instructor of Media Arts in the Art Dept, and Dr. Amy Brock Martin, SC Rural Health Research Center, Arnold School of Public Health (ASPH), met to discuss a collaborative research project.

From that first lunch meeting, it was clear that they had intersecting interests in research and the display of quantitative and qualitative information regarding health care in South Carolina.

It was decided that three areas of initial study to be included in a documentary video are:

The challenge would be to take the numbers and accurately tell a story of health care for vulnerable populations in the State, while maintaining the interest of the audience by using the language of film for presentation.

Further spicing the mix, undergraduate film students would work with Hogue to do the video research. Dr. Martin and graduate students from the ASPH would provide research and guidance to media artists.

In Summer 06, Hogue and Martin solidified plans and production began in Fall 06.
