Artist Statement

I'm a Graphic Designer by nature. I work with symbols, images and typography on multiple layers to create powerful visual pieces. I love to work with image-making and textures of both typography and images to create effective work for my clients. However, my likes and dislikes are not involved and there should be very little, if any, personal expression in work created for a client. Book Arts gives me the freedom to express myself using elements of design. All of the same aspects that make me passionate about being a designer also make me enthusiastic about Book Arts. I work with symbols, images and typography on multiple layers to create powerful visual pieces. Also, the complex physical work and production, such as die-cuts, constructing folds, and binding, that are vital to making books is a welcome break from the digital production world of graphic design. Time and sequence is very important to my work as a book artist. Questions like, What does a pause look like visually?? and ?How do I convey that to my audience?? are important to me. My books combine experimental, traditional and digital printing methods. In my work I have tried to translate stories that I have heard or read into visual forms. However, recently works have shifted into investigating how to give intangible things a visually form.
