Assistant
Professor of Art History
Assistant Professor Laura Voight, a specialist in Roman Art and Archaeology, joined the faculty of the Department of Art in the Fall of 2006. She earned her Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from Brown University. Currently, her scholarship focuses on the function and meaning of ancient Roman wall paintings and mosaics within the domestic sphere. Among other projects, she is currently transforming parts of her dissertation on the late Roman mosaics from Antioch on the Orontes into a book analyzing how cosmopolitan trends influenced the designs and meanings of the clothing and jewelry depicted in the mosaics.
Her classes at USC offer students the opportunity to survey the art and architecture of the ancient and medieval time periods. Specialized topics covering Roman Houses, Roman Painting and Mosaics, Women in the Ancient World, Greek Temples, Ceremony in the Early Medieval and Byzantine periods, and Ancient Pottery will also be offered. Professor Voight's teaching and research methods include art historical, archaeological, interdisciplinary and feminist approaches to the material.
