Students pursuing art education degrees typically become teachers or professors, but some go into museum education or art-based therapy. Art education programs are meant to help students understand the role of art in society, formulate and defend a philosophy of art, and become sophisticated consumers of art. Since a broad knowledge of art is required of art educators, students are exposed to studio art, art history and criticism, and aesthetics.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art education is intended for undergraduate students planning a career and seeking certification in teaching. The Master of Arts in Teaching is for graduate students seeking initial certification in art. The Master of Arts and Interdisciplinary Master of Arts are designed for those who are already certified to teach but wish to obtain advanced degrees.
Our students are very active in the National Art Education Student Chapter at USC. Monthly meetings are scheduled and various activities, lectures, and outreach programs are planned each year.
