Meet the Crew! All the crew members of Promises Made are students from the University of South Carolina Department of Art.

Lauren Waring
Associate Producer
  • Lauren Waring is a University of South Carolina Honors College Student, who already has extensive professional media experience to her credit. She has worked for SC ETV for the past several months for her second appointment there and recently finished work with Walker Productions in Rock Hill, SC in July of 2005 on the set of 'Walker'.
  • Due to her immediate display of skill in classroom work with Hogue, Waring was chosen to be the Associate producer in 2003 for the then upcoming Promises Made Documentary.
  • Waring served as major researcher for the documentary, receiving a grant to work from 2003-2004 on work on Promises, and served as the chief still photographer, thereby creating most stills associated with the documentary.
  • Waring also presented Promises as a work in progress at the South Carolina undergraduate research Discovery Day in 2005, and accompanied Hogue to both Hawaii and Chicago for the screenings of Promises in 2005.
  • Her own work has been aired on SC ETV since 2003, serving as producer for Connections with P.A. Bennett.

Kim Emswiler
Cinematographer
  • Earned a Bachelor of Media Arts at the University of South Carolina in spring 2004. I earned this degree while working full time, at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Columbia, in positions ranging from administrative assistant, to claims adjustor to budget assistant. Managing my education and a full time job and achieving the 2-year film project with Professor Susan Hogue are my greatest accomplishment to date.
  • In my short media career from 1995 to 2004, beyond serving as Chief Cinematographer for Promises Made, I produced, filmed and directed, "A Little White Vegas Wedding" in 2004.
  • Other media work has been in the field of commercial and sports photographer from 1999 to 2003, freelance video and editing, experiences from which I have gained the digital skills necessary to actively participate in DIY filmmaking; and the eye for effective
    visual sequencing.

Josh Rose
Picture Editor
  • Josh Rose is a recent graduate of the USC Media Arts Area of the Art Department. His work in editing has presented him with many local opportunities, and his work is in high demand, due to his extremely adept handling of digital technology and his ability to understand and interpret what the director is trying to achieve in the story.
  • Josh has been the editor for 'Buddy Cops', the script writer for the SC Lottery "Sweet Tea" Advertisement which Aired in summers of 2004 and 2005 and was chosen to edit Promises Made.
  • His recent production "The Greatest Artist who Ever Lived" is a take off on serious art and the categorization of art in contemporary society which he has finished and begun to submit to festivals.
 


Susan Hogue
Director, Executive Producer

"All of my work has been about telling short stories and often those narratives have been about U.S. culture. It was an easy move to motion and documentary from years of visual work as photographer and bookartist. " - Susan Hogue

  • Susan Hogue is a professor of photography, book art, and digital media. Over the past 30 years, she has photographed a number of subjects including Senator Strom Thurmond and world renowned psychologist B.F. Skinner.
  • Her work has been exhibited in galleries all across the U.S. including the 2005 Joyce Elaine Grant Dig Exhibit at Texas Women’s University, and the 2004 Life by the Book, ArtSpace Exhibit at the University of Virginia. Also in 2005, she has showcased Promises Made as a work in progress at the Hawaii International Conference for the Arts and Humanities, The University Film and Video Association in Chicago, Illinois and the Purple Violet Film Festival at Kean University in New Jersey.
  • Professor Hogue is immediate past President of the Southeastern Association for Book Arts. Promises Made is her first documentary.
