POWER COMPANY DANCE PERFORMANCE |
Butoh is a performing art form that originated in post World War II Japan. It is a contemporary form of physical theatre and a reaction to traditional forms in Japan yet maintains its roots through the use of certain elements like stark white face and body make-up, slow meditative movement and a reverence for nature.
The Power Company is a professional dance company in residence at Columbia College, known for excellence in producing site-specific performances. The company draws from a body of awareness of global contemporary dance forms.
Led by Artistic Director Martha Brim, The Power Company has created a Butoh-inspired performance for Asian Arts week, drawing inspiration from the visual art of Asian Arts Week visiting printmaker Haruka Furusaka, which will be performed in the outdoor plaza of the Columbia Museum of Art.
