The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB®) is annual academic competition for high school students that promotes science literacy, enriches science teaching, and increases interest, understanding, and stewardship of the oceans.
NOSB is broadening the awareness and understanding of our dependency on the oceans and the
critical value of ocean research, and is helping create a knowledgeable citizenry who are crucial
to appropriate use and conservation of coastal and ocean resources. This competition
accomplishes these goals by bringing coastal and ocean information into the classroom and by
serving as a tool for disciplinary and cross-disciplinary science education. We also hope to
encourage, and inspire, students to pursue careers in marine science and related fields. The Baruch Institute hosts the South Carolina and Georgia regional competition of NOSB® every year with support from the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education, federal
agencies, and NGOs, and a suite of local sponsors. Winners of the regional event advance to compete in the national competition; which in 2008 will be held in Seward, Alaska (all expenses paid). All students participating in the regional are eligible for national internships and scholarships.
