In order to scan an image you will need to use Photoshop. First, open Photoshop.

Got to File>Import and choose the scanner from the list of devices. Most of the scanners in the lab are Epson Perfection V350s.

You can choose one of three modes. Full Auto is the easiest to use and provides decent quality scans. Home Mode allows the user to tweak some simple settings. Professional is a little more complex than home mode. If you choose to use the full automatic mode all you will need to do is click on scan and the image will be imported into photoshop. Skip down to the saving instructions if you uses this mode.

For a little more control over your image choose home mode. Select the document type. Choose color, grayscale, or black and white. Set the resolution that you would like to scan at. If you will need to enlarge the image choose other and set the resolution higher than 300dpi. Click on preview to get a preview scan.

Select the area that you would like to scan in the preview window and click scan. The image will be transferred to photoshop.

Saving in Photoshop. Once the image is in Photoshop you will need to save it as a file. Go to File>Save to do this. In the save as window name your file and choose a location. If you don't see the location that you are looking for click on the down arrow next to the file name for more options. You need to choose a file format. The default format is photoshop. This file will only open in photoshop. If you want a universal picture you probably want to choose JPEG for the format.

Click save.

You will see the following dialogue if you chose JPEG. Set the quality of the image here. Large numbers equal higher quality and larger file sizes. I recommend 12 or maximum unless you need small images for the web.

If you need to rotate your picture, do this before saving it. In photoshop this feature is located in the image menu at the top of the page. Go to Rotate Canvas and choose the direction and angle of rotation.
