Scholarships and Awards

Undergraduate Scholarships Overview

The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice awards scholarships to entering and continuing students. Criminology and Criminal Justice majors who wish to be considered for scholarships honoring Meredith Thompson and J. P. Strom must follow the application instructions and apply by the appropriate deadlines in order to receive full consideration.

To apply for a scholarship, download the scholarship application. When complete, save and email to the Academic Program Director, Kathy Smiling, at smiling@mailbox.sc.edu.

J. P. Strom Undergraduate Scholarship

Annual Value: $2000

Four Year value $8000

Awarded to an incoming freshman majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice and attending the USC Columbia campus. Criteria used for selection of the successful J. P. Strom Undergraduate Scholar include outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and service. The award of $1000 per semester is renewable for up to 3 years as long as the student maintains a minimum “B” average. ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN MAY 15TH FOR FALL SEMESTER CONSIDERATION.

Meredith Thompson Undergraduate Scholarship

Annual Value: $1000

Four Year value $3000

Awarded to a continuing student (sophomore, junior, senior) majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice and attending the USC Columbia campus. Applicants must have successfully completed at least 30 credit hours, including a minimum of six hours of Criminology and Criminal Justice course work and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Criteria used for selection of the Meredith Thompson Undergraduate Scholar include academic achievement, leadership, and service to the department or university. The award of $500 per semester is renewable for up to 3 years as long as the student maintains a minimum “B” average. ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN MAY 15TH FOR FALL SEMESTER CONSIDERATION.

J.P Strom Non-resident Scholar Award

Annual Value: $500

Four Year value $2000

Awarded to new and continuing students (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice and attending the USC Columbia campus. Criteria used for selection of the J. P. Strom Non-resident Scholar include academic achievement, leadership, and service. The award of $250 per semester is renewable for up to 3 years as long as the student maintains a minimum “B” average. Only non-residents are eligible to apply under current department guidelines. Recipients of this scholarship will also receive a substantial tuition reduction under existing university rules. ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN MAY 15 TH FOR FALL SEMESTER CONSIDERATION AND OCTOBER 15TH FOR SPRING SEMESTER CONSIDERATION.

Robert A. Wilbur Police Scholarship

Annual Value: $500

Four Year value $2000

Awarded to a Columbia Police Officer who has served a minimum of 3 years of sworn service to the Columbia Police Department and is seeking higher education. The student must be admitted to the University of South Carolina and accepted as a Criminal Justice major or into the MCJ Program. The student must declare their intention to continue in the police service career. The award of $500 per semester is renewable for up to 3 years as long as the student maintains a minimum “B” average. ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN MAY 15 TH FOR FALL SEMESTER CONSIDERATION AND OCTOBER 15TH FOR SPRING SEMESTER CONSIDERATION.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate research and teaching assistantships are available to M.A. students. Graduate assistants work 20 hours per week and they receive a stipend. The department pays tuition costs and partial health insurance benefits are also avialable. Applicants may indicate their interest in an assistantship on the online application for graduate admission. Because graduate assistantship awards are highly competitive, students who seek an assistantship are encouraged to apply early. The department's Graduate Committee begins reviewing applications on March 1st for fall semester. Undergraduate Awards

Rising Senior Award

The College of Arts and Sciences sponsors the Rising Senior Award for students in the arts, humanities, and social sciences areas. The award is $500 to be distributed through the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships in two increments: $250 for Fall and $250 for Spring.

Outstanding Academic Excellence Award

This award is presented to the graduating Criminology and Criminal Justice major who has attained the highest grade point average. The recipient receives an engraved plaque.

Outstanding Service Award

This award is presented to a junior or senior who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service as measured by participation in the Department, the University or Civic Organization. The recipient recieves an engraved plaque.

Graduate Awards
Outstanding Graduate Student

This award is presented to the student who exemplifies outstanding work and achievement in the masters program.
