Congratulations to our Summer/Fall 2011
Magellan Scholars!!

Taylor SmithTaylor Smith (Freshman, Dance Performance) has been awarded a Magellan Scholarship for Summer/Fall 2011.  Working with instructor Diane McGhee Valle, Smith's year-long study will explore Traditional Polish Dancing: An Investigation into National and Culturally-Specific Dances that Exist in Poland Today

Aided by her proficiency in the Polish language, Ms. Smith will conduct and evaluate research on traditional Polish dancing and meet with U.S. experts in the field, including UNC Chapel Hill's Polish Department. Ms. Smith will also travel to Ladek Zdroj International Dance Festival in Ladek Zdroj, Poland to learn from Poland's greatest folk dance teachers and translate select Polish writings on folk dancing.

Smith will present the results of her work in the USC Dance Program's World Dance courses and host dance workshops and performances during the 2011-12 academic year.

Jennifer CoffeyAmanda Nelson

Jennifer Coffey (Sophomore, Dance Education) and Amanda Nelson (Freshman, Dance Education) have been awarded Magellan Scholarships for Summer/Fall 2011, and will commence a year-long study of Intergenerational Dance with Dr. Mila Parrish.  Their proposal, Intergenerational Dance: Reaching, Connecting and Building Community, will look at the ways communities are changed when movement activities are used to share life experiences, create new awareness of the self and of others.

The interdisciplinary dance curricula will center on the topic of compassion so as to bring rich and engaging conversations and artistic inspiration for participants as many of them are concerned with concepts of relevance, connotation of meaning, and political and social influence.

Coffee and Nelson will attend the Dance and the Child Conference in Dallas, Texas this summer as part of their research study.

Congratulations to these outstanding students!
