Voypas by Wideman Davis Dance at Drayton Hall TheatreProfessional dance troupe Wideman/Davis Dance will premiere a brand new work, Voypas, at the University of SC's Drayton Hall Theatre November 29 - December 2, 2011.

Show time for each performance is 8pm.  Tickets are priced $16 for the general public, $14 for university faculty and staff, military and seniors 60+, and $10 for students with valid i.d.  Tickets are available by calling the box office at (803) 777-5112; charge by phone at (803) 251-2222.

Choreographed by Wideman/Davis Dance artistic directors Thaddeus Davis and Tanya Wideman-Davis, Voypas explores the concept of voyeurism in our society, where lives are increasingly displayed in the public sphere.  Davis says the term “voypas” was coined by author Stephan Mackie in his essay, Architecture: The Stage for Voyeurism, which explored the role of architecture as a means of engaging in  voyeuristic behavior.

"On one level, we're looking at how the theatre itself is a place for voyeurs," says Thaddeus Davis.  "The viewer comes to the show expecting to see a certain display of vulnerability while hiding in the anonymity of the darkened theatre."

He explains, "With this piece, we're also making an effort to take away the simple sexual connotation of being a voyeur.  Where does surveillance end and voyeurism begin?"

Davis says the piece isn't as specifically driven by societal issues as some of the company's past work, which has included Based on Images, an examination of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy, and Balance, which addressed the issue of homelessness.

"It's not as oriented to social issues as in the past, but it is the most expansive work we've ever developed here at the university," he says.

Wideman/Davis Dance is the resident professional company of the University of SC Dance program.  Since 2009, the group has developed four new works at the university which have been performed throughout the country.  Founders and Co-Artistic Directors Thaddeus Davis and Tanya Wideman-Davis have performed throughout the world in such notable companies as the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Donald Byrd/The Group and Complexions.  Thaddus won the prestigious Choo San Goh Award for Choreography in 2003.

Wideman/Davis Dance company members Vincent Michael Lopez, Emily Tedesco and Kalin Morrow, who will all travel to Columbia from professional residences in Seattle and Nevada, will be joined by senior dance performance major Jacquelyn Ball for the performance.  The piece will also feature live music by university music instructor Sonja Jacobsen, as well as live and pre-recorded video.  Innovative scenic design for the concert was conceived through a collaboration between Davis and designers Eric Morris and Kimi Maeda.

Preceding Voypas each evening at 6pm, the University of SC Dance Program will present Future Perfect: Student Choreography Showcase at Drayton Hall Theatre.  Tickets are $10 - $16, and will be sold separately.  Tickets can be reserved by calling (803) 777-5112; charge by phone at (803) 251-2222.
